What Omphalis stands for

Last updated 2026-10-30

Omphalis stands for active, returnable, and revisable understanding of material you choose to keep. Where consumptive feeds and one-shot summaries optimize for getting past a piece quickly, a custodial library keeps the original work intact so your understanding can deepen and change when you return.

Shortcuts that replace reading with a summary often create false fluency: the feeling of having grasped an argument without ever testing its premises or seeing where the evidence holds up. Omphalis does the structural work around a piece, cleaning the layout, mapping its Strata moments, and surfacing precise marks, while leaving the reading and judgment with you.

Keep the source and your interpretation distinct. Return to a highlighted passage, review the note you wrote, and compare another source when it changes the question. Strata, Annotations and notebooks support that work; reading and judgment remain yours.

Example: keep the original work available so you can return and revise your thinking.
